Update on Sarah

It was 3 weeks ago today that Sarah came home from her two-night stay in the hospital. In the week after that we first stopped her inhaler, and then the prednisone. We were a little nervous about how she would respond after stopping the medicine, but she hasn't show any signs of asthma or difficulty breathing.

The week after she came home, she had an appointment with the lung specialist. He only had to ask Jolanda a few questions and after observing Sarah during the interview he concluded that it was a classic case of enlarged adenoids. These are located at the back of the nasal airway (wikipedia article) and can cause all kinds of problems when they're enlarged, including frequent ear infections, colds, etc.

While we're not happy about it, we're glad that it is something relatively simple and commonplace. She is scheduled to have them "removed" - the actual term they used was scraped - tomorrow (Monday, June 2nd), along with 5 other babies, in a procedure which will last about 20 minutes. They will also make a small puncture in each eardrum to help relieve some of the pressure in her ear. If all goes well, she will be home by lunch time.

Since we have to leave so early tomorrow morning, we have arranged for Lisa to sleep over at a friend's house tonight (Sunday). When we told her about it earlier this week, she didn't want to do it, since she's a little nervous about those kinds of things. Later in the week, though, we heard her telling some of her friends proudly that she was spending the night at Julia's house. We figured at that point that she was okay with it.

Please pray:
- for Lisa, that she will do okay this evening and tonight at Julia's house.
- for Sarah's procedure tomorrow morning, that she would respond well to the anesthesia and that the procedure would go well.
- that this would produce the long-term effects we are hoping for (less sickness, ear-infections, breathing through her nose instead of her mouth, etc.)
